This "Trails" page is being revised to contain trail maps, articles and driving directions for trails throughout the greater Los Angeles area, for the convenience of all low-impact recreational trail users. Information pertaining to equestrian issues (availablility of water, trailer parking, turn-around access) is provided as it is made available. Our hope is that more equestrians will be encouraged to hook up their rigs and go out exploring in neighborhoods they might otherwise have never discovered. By supporting each other's trail communities, we all contribute to keeping our trails alive and healthy in greater Los Angeles. January 21, 2005 -- L.A. ANIMAL SERVICES ISSUES WARNING: EQUESTRIANS & HIKERS USE EXTREME CAUTION Los Angeles Animal Services is issuing a warning to residents, equestrians and hikers to use extreme caution when using trails and creek beds that may have been affected by recent rains and flooding. Since the rains have subsided, joggers and equestrians are again starting to enjoy the sun and typical California temperatures. Residents need to remember, however, that although the ground may appear dry and stable, areas affected by a series of heavy rainstorms and flooding can remain unstable for up to twelve weeks after the rain. Unstable areas present hidden dangers that can result in sinkholes, bogs and mudslides. It is important that those enjoying the outdoors use extreme caution and confine their activity to the main trails. Failure to heed this warning could result in injury, loss of life and closure of the trails and other areas. For more information call L.A. Animal Services at 1-888-4LA-PET1/ 1-888-452-7381 (TTY Hearing Impaired: 877-875-8205) or visit L.A. Animal Services on the web at www.LAAnimalServices.com

Trails & Trail Issues In addition to news about trail issues, we also want to showcase the many miles of beautiful trails and beautiful horses we have in the San Fernando Valley.
AGN. NO._____

The below Motion was introduced at the Board of Supervisor's meeting declaring April as Equestrian Safety Month countywide. Many thanks to Supervisor Antonovich for helping raise awareness of this important issue.
AGN. NO._____
MOTION BY SUPERVISOR MICHAEL D. ANTONOVICH MARCH 30, 2004
Los Angeles County is home to a large and active equestrian community who enjoy our hundreds of miles of trails. However, these riders face risks where trails intersect roadways. While most drivers have little knowledge of horse behavior, equestrians understand that these large animals can become frightened near cars and traffic, creating a potentially hazardous situation.
The California Vehicle Code states that the driver of any vehicle approaching any horse drawn vehicle or ridden animal shall reduce speed or stop as requested by the horseback rider to avoid frightening the animal and to insure the safety of both people and animals.
To educate motorists in Los Angeles County about equestrians and the vehicle code to prevent accidents and injuries where automobiles and horses co-exist, the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council's Equestrian Committee, the Chatsworth Equine Cultural Heritage Organization and Equestrian Trails Incorporated Corral 54 join us in hosting the First Annual "Los Angeles County Equestrian Safety Month" during April 2004.
I, THEREFORE, MOVE that the Board proclaim the month of April 2004 as "Equestrian Safety Month" throughout the County of Los Angeles to encourage safety and to educate motorists and equestrians about the rules of the road to prevent accidents and injuries where cars and horses cross paths.

| 2003 May 24 - Much rain has turned the trail above Rancho Padilla (between Little Tujunga and Kagel Canyon) into a sea of wild flowers. Select image to enlarge.
